York, the only slave on the Lewis and Clark expedition was known to Native Americans as “Big Medicine”. Having never seen a black man before, he was thought to have magical powers. They often trusted him before other members of the expedition. In the sculpture “Knowledge Passed”, York hands a branch of the Paw Paw tree to Lewis Merriweather. Historically indigenous people always passed knowledge hand to hand. The Paw Paw symbolizes the Native American knowledge that ensured the success of the expedition. ‘Knowledge Passed’ was carved from soapstone which is sacred to Native Americans
