Promethius was the mythical Greek demigod who gave fire and other technologies to humanity. For sharing these innovations with mankind, Promethius was bound to a rock and endured an eternity of punishment. Tragically, modern innovators are still more often criticized than praised. John was commissioned by the Competitve Enterprise Institute to create The Promethius Award to honor individuals whose scientific and technological innovations have brought vast but often unappreciated benefits to mankind. The first Promethius Award was given to Norman E. Borlaug. His efforts over more than five decades have saved hundreds of millions of people from starvation and malnutrition. It is a life-sized image of a hand and flame, representing Promethius' innovative gift of fire to mankind. The engraved Latin motto, Floreat Humanitas, or “Let Humanity Flourish,” suggests our optimistic view of mankind's future in a world in which individuals are free to innovate.
